Visiting historical sites in Karnataka makes for a disorienting experience, according to Mr Sharan Desai, former state planning board member with passion for the study of history and archeology. He is quoted in ‘The Hindu’ as saying most of the lesser known sites he visited run the risk of crumbling down or being misused. Their conservation is not a priority in anyone’s political agenda.

Calling for a more comprehensive approach to conservation Mr Desai says successful historical conservation projects can benefit communities by raising property value and creating tourism-related jobs. Mr Desai’s passion has taken him to several lesser known monuments in the state. He refers to one near Srirangapatna, a mausoleum to a British colonel, William Baillie, killed in the Mysore Wars of 1782. After Tipu Sultan’s defeat the colonel’s family interred his remains and built a memorial near Srirangapatna.

Meanwhile the archaeology and museums directorate plans to organize district level seminars throughout Karnataka to promote better public understanding of local history and culture.
