It's the likes of Dr. B Nirmala who make a difference to life in Mysore. Dr. Nirmala, NSS officer, Maharani Science College, and her spirited students have registered over 2000 eye-donation pledges with the Mysore eye bank and research centre. Besides upholding the spirit of NSS Dr Nirmala's work illustrates the critical role teachers can play in spreading public awareness and promoting the eye-donation movement, says Mysore Eye Bank secretary B S Madhura. The Maharani NSS gesture can be better appreciated if one realises the problems involved in mobilising eye-donars. Apart from superstition in a section of society, ignorence and illiteracy there is legal hassle in removing corenia within a specified time span of the death of a donar. - Shankar Bennur in Deccan Herald
