A columnist of Lahore’s ‘Daily Times’, Ishtiaq Ahmed, in his latest piece on ‘Hindu legal codes and democracy’, cites my NYC based Mysore-connected friend and occasional surfer of this site.
Columnist Ahmed wrote: “I received an email from Premkumar Harimohan in which he writes, “I am a Hindu Brahmin from Bangalore, Karnataka state, who feels that that the first Indian and shahid was the Tiger of Mysore, Tipu Sultan, who with his father General Hyder Ali Khan had the most secular government ever in India and who gave up his life on the battlefield for India. That is why whenever I go to India I go to the patriots’ mazar to offer homage to them and join the presiding maulvi, Syed Akhtar Husain, at namaz. Tipu Sultan is always remembered at a Hindu temple in Najangud 10 miles away from the mazar as the greatest benefactor the temple ever had.”
It is not only at Nanjangud. Remember the Ranganatha Swamy Temple right opposite the Tippu Palace in Srirangapattana? What better example do we require for his benevolance. Also it was proved that knowledge is more important than religious attachments. Poornaiah as his chief advisor is ample proof. Can our so called politicians ever follow this example?
