Scott Heiferman has a clue. He lists 50 reasons why more people aren’t using your website. His context is browsers in the US. But quite a few of his reasons work for us as well. Take, for instance, Scott’s Reason number 1. More people aren’t using the site because they don’t want to generate content, they want better life.
Reason No. 9. The website is not fun enough
18. People have jobs & kids, and they’re busy.
27. This site is clearly something for ‘computer people’.
39. They’ve never heard of it (your site).
40. There’s something better to do.
46. There aren’t enough people using it yet to make it useful.
50. They don’t want to read what you want them to read.
Mr. GVK, I think reason No 39 is the best bet since this website has only gone by word of mouth. Other reasons are No. 20 because they are scared of the computer (I know a few), No. 18- jobs kids and busy (yeah right! Mysoreans have a pressure cooker existence!), No. 22 because they don't write very well (know a few who I am trying to change because to me, one's vocabulary should not be limiting factor in participation and hence I encourage everyone to write), Oh, maybe No.50 as well. Something not mentioned and should have been "because we are mysoreans!" That would be an insult and would raise the hackles of many. Prove me wrong.
Nimma Nimma anisikegalannu hanchikolli..... (Pl share your thought processes and viewpoints )
Nice thought, Mr Nataraj. And thank you for the explanatory sentences between lines, for the benefit of those of us who are Kannada-challenged. Would you consider sharing your ideas in English, in the first place, so that we won't have to read between the lines ? Just a thought.
Thanks for your inputs . My intention was that English version immediately after Kannada would be easy for the readers to grasp rather than reading in English first and then making an effort to correlate with Kannada , which is very unlikely to be done.
Perhaps a concerted effort to publicise this site can negate problem # 39. But it can only be sustained if #9 is tackled. But calling it "fun" doesn't quite capture it. "Aesthetically pleasing" may be a better fit. But then these trivialties do not deter the seriously interested folk and that may well be enough to carry on, as is.
Very few people know that such a website exists....If we search on google for the word Mysore, this web site comes up in probably the 13 or 14 page. Very few go that deep to look and check out.
I wonder how so many crappy looking sites abt mysore come up so early on the search. I assume if we can move the website hit on google search a few more pages it will definitely help.
More interesting articles about the developments of mysore will make the website more interesting and wanting to come back. Stuff like new hotels, development of kukkarahalli kere, new real estate prices, any new hot spots, any new celebrity from mysore....
It may be necessary to promote the website like a viral marketing campaign or more something like network marketing. Remember those fancy pyramid schemes that always promise to make you a billionaire but really never get you off the ground.
Common in the Western world but is it common in India? Do you want a localised readership or a global marketplace. Should Mysore go to the world or have the world come to Mysore?
I think it works both ways. Reason no 51: Keep plugging. ( At least we got 215 hits on Up close and cheeky with crocs) Anyone want to up that number? Please visit the other blog on this site. We have as much fun as anyboy can have? Now is this viral marketing?
