Internet for all; a distant dream ?

Google and Earthlink have been chosen to set up in San Francisco a citywide wireless Internet network that would enable residents log on wirelessly from anywhere in the city for free. The initiative has come from the city administration. Advantages: 1)  It boosts the technology credentials of the city; and 2) bridges the digital divide. The city admn. doesn’t need to spend anything. Google hops to make its money on online ad. revenue. Earthlink could generate revenue from customers who want speedier access at a monthly fee. Wi-Fi free connection, they say, would be faster than a dial-up but slower than broadband. Evidently, economies of scale works in favour of all concerned in SFO – city admn. and Internet users get the digital infrastructure free; and the companies make money from elsewhere.

Mysore, they say, is one of two cities in the world in which it is technologically feasible to Wi-Fi connect the entire city. Does it mean we can wireless network the place at a lower cost? Perhaps, Mr Sankar Prasad can enlighten us on this aspect. Excel Soft has been at work on this Wi-Fi thing. Click here to read more….
