Mysore dreams for 2006

MyMysore dot com has been up and about for nearly an year now. And we can’t say we have accomplished much, by way of resolving issues or actualizing ideas that have been published on the web. For the record, the sum total of our achievement in this regard can be put in just two words – zero, ZERO.

Our site hasn’t stirred movers and shakers. Probably, because this Mysore dot-com initiative hasn’t had a fanfare launch or any media exposure. We are on a word-of-mouth publicity mode. Ours is perhaps the only Internet-driven community platform that relies on ‘bush telegraph’ for site promotion. My dream is to stir things up in 2006 with our thoughts, if not much action.

We could do with doers. But we need dreamers more to sustain the website; I perceive this site as a clearing house of ideas; as a think-tank whose concepts may be ahead of their time. We encourage arm-chair critics who can articulate their thoughts on the web. We promote input from those who dream up ideas that could make Mysore truly mahan.

We have people trotting out five reasons why something can’t be done; persons who could tell you that a citizen-driven initiative that caught on like a house on fire in Bandra or Mangalore would not work in Myssore. Such persons serve a purpose; they inspired my zine5.com write up, No Ideas, please, We’re Mysoreans.

I wish in 2006 we network with more a can-do people; we deal with more time-conscious Mysoreans who don’t keep us waiting, turn up when they say they would. And I wish we have more people who return our phone calls.

Congrats for putting up this web site in the first place. I am sure that "bush telegraph" way is the reason for lack of wide publicity but I don't suppose we want a lot of people writing junk. When we read some of the responses on some of the blogs published on TOI online and other newspapers and the amount of "authors" writing junk and using strange language, it's better such chaps are not enticed to write. Not that this website has to be the exclusive purview of a few intellectuals. There's a lot of wheat available, no need to mix with the chaff.

I agree with GVK in that we need doers and dreamers. We need a good mix of comments both ways of an argument. I'd say, without reservations, that this web site has been the best thing that happened to Mysoreans. Lets encourage and avail of this platform to voice our views, opinions and try to do something about changing ourselves, the way we live perhaps, the way we think perhaps (as Mysoreans), our laid back attitude. If Mysoreans can shine outside Mysore, why not while living here? Remember Swami Vivekananda- Arise, Awake mysoreans (with due apologies and respects to SV) and stop not till the goal is reached.

We have a number of things to get involved. This platform is a good way to begin and continue. A note to Mysoreans outside, I know you guys are busy, I know I ws when I ws living in the West for so many years BUT we need your inputs as well. In fact, I dare say that the administrators of this city and the officials will take greater interest if overseas Mysoreans start writing, blogging and building up the pressure to resolve issues facing Mysore. Some of you may want to come back and settle here, do you want to return to chaos or a better place? If it is the latter, arise and awake-this applies to you as well.

Well myMysore might not have caught fire as one would have expected. This is not just because nothing moves in Mysore or Mysoreans are indifferent. When the web is expanding so rapidly, and there are so many things one can do, it would take time.

As far as MGP is concerned, it did benefit in some small ways. MGP was able to connect with Dr. Vasudev, a dentist living in Florida who is orginally from Mysore. He has agreed to get some of his friends involved in "SAVE MYSORE" campaign and also to sell the magazine "SAVE MYSORE" for $10 per copy.

Secondly MGP got connected with a group of new generation who would like to move away from the urban life, live in a rual environment experiencing the sustainable living and at the same time help the nearby rural residents. This has amply showed what this site can do and I am sure in the coming years, this will achieve great results.

I wish all the success to this site. Let us be patient.

Dear Krishnan,

When you drop a stone in a pool of stationary water, the first thing that starts is only a minor ripple or low level of activity. It is only when the momentum increases that it (level of activity or action) builds up into a wave.

Let us not get disheartened or worry. We will continue to cause ripples in areas which will preserve the peace, tranquility and heritage of the "Heaven" we know and call as "Mysore". I am sure in due course we can cause a "tsunami" of preservation and development benefecial to our beloved city

I stumbled on the site and I think the potential for integrating the skill sets from diverse resources around Mysore through such an exercise is enormous.Empowering others while retaining the essence/character of the site can be accomplished fairly easily.

The rapid growth of Mysore City will not be accompanied by an equal emphasis on infrastructure related to roads, transport, power, water, sanitation, drainage, waste disposal, health and hygiene unless there is an attempt by citizens groups to make the administration accountable and responsive. The recent outbursts by politicians against Infosys'   Narayanmurthy, the successful action by the Mussourie Dehradun Citizens Groups, the privatisation of waste disposal and garbage collection in Hyderabad, the Public Private partnership model in Delhi for creating public conveniences, the "adopt a monument"scheme in Rajasthan, the creation of Bus terminals at Shimla and Amritsar, and the privatisation of services at the platforms of Agra Rail terminal through a single vendor, the water conservation methods popularised by Welcomgroup, the provision of basic amenities for truck drivers at Reliance fuel stations and other successes and failures can easily be shared or links provided.Mysore has its own share of successes in organic farming, providing opportunities for learning Yoga, having an academic environment and preserving intrinsic values.

I think from a tourism perspective Mysore can showcase living traditions at heritage sites, creating a culinary resource center, having a herb and medicinal plants resource centre, creating a musical heritage resource centre and having a hub/spoke arrangement to offer a choice of soft adventure/forest,spiritual,cultural,plantation, and special interest options within an hour or two of the periphery of the city.Home stays can also be popularised to augment lack of hotels.

To succeed it may be neccessary to structure a mentoring programme and i hope this forum will succeed in providing this.Maybe you can set yourself modest goals to be accomplished with an 18 month timeframe to celebrate 60 years of independence.

Dear GVK Yours is an Optimistic, as well as, ambitious outlook. I congratulate you on this vision that most of us lack. It reminds me of a quote:

Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night. Edgar Allan Poe, "Eleonora"
US short story author, editor, & poet (1809 - 1849)

I am of the opinion that optimists need patience (I know, my friends and dearones will say: Physician, heal thyself). Then we must also have a look at our own innernet - I mean the ultimate self or "knowing how to know".  knowing how to know is the book by Idris Shah; another Learning How to Learn : Psychology and Spirituality in the Sufi Way, by Idris Shah. What I am trying to convey is, "We do too much in our society now of cutting out food, as opposed to learning how to eat it productively (aka, efficient and effective practices in the business world). Hence, let's build a knowledge-base. By this I mean content for motivation, inspiration and attitude assessment.

By the way, talking about inspiration and knowledge sharing, I have one question:
I had seen some comments on Amway by   - TOPIC: "Amways-Subtle game of PR work to waylay on golden path leading to nowhere." Is that comment moved? As a person who is a knowledge worker by what is profess, I simply wanted to share my Knowledge with the group on this topic. Any help in locating that corner?

Understandably, even if the comment and a reply sounded odd, let me add one impression of mine: we need to be educated and accordingly balance Our Life Styles as we learn to LIVE with the Western mannerism.

Best wishes from a information visualization blogger and Multifaith Librarian, Dr. Mohamed Taher
