More on that closure option
Permalink

As I wrote in my earlier post - MyMysore.com: Closure is an option - Nov. is the month for us to effect a closure. I have given myself time till mid-November. when the site administrator, technical guide and my son would be in Mysore. We have heard from scores of  well-wishers who wouldn't want this site to go away.

But some don't seem to take my words at the face value. To quote a comment, "It has become a habit for Mr GVK to threaten closure from time to time, perhaps to drum up support. Many things have closed - including Maharaja's durbar and his jumboosavari, and the world is still ticking; and so will be, after this blog".

The world would, sure, be ticking still. But it would not be the same for some of us. Closure is the easiest thing for anyone to do, particularly for those who don't feel a stake in it; and those who have not gone through the excitement and hassles of creating it. As I understand it, there are two options to putting the MyMysore venture behind us: 1) Close down the site , with all data deleted out of the web; or 2) Find someone else to run it, in the manner that is acceptable to all.

We, my son and I, are clear about stepping out of the site administration. Come Nov.15, MyMysore site would switch to 'Pause' mode. We reckon that among the well-wishers of this site there may be someone who might want to take control of this site.

On my part, my blogs would continue to be up and running. If we have some other bloggers who want to do the same, we could consider creating a Mysore Group Blog.

A much maligned person like yours truly just watched for more than a fortnight the activities in this blog without uttering even a word of comment. It is not an understatement to say that this blog has not been ticking at all during that time- there was a 'regurgitated' posting concerning 'pensioners and Mysore' and even one moan about personal experience with an eye doctor! Those 'friends of the blog' who with such gusto supported the blog only as replies to my comments I should add, shied away during the last fortnight!! The writing is on the wall for this blog as well as a sister blog which is quickly sliding downhill without even a whisper of a reply.

Is this posting necessary again ? Surely it can't be a ploy?!! Come on strangers , your comments are needed !!!

Dear GVK,

It will certainly be the last thing most of us want.  True, I have not been able to voice more of my opinion in the recent past.  All that is water under the bridge.  But, I for one will certainly be one of the many losers.  It was through this site's encouragement and exposure that I got a taste of blogging and joining in on discussions that were related to one place that is close to my heart - Nanna Mysooru (My Mysore).  It certainly takes a lot of will, dedication, concern and enthusiasm to start a discussion forum.  How many of us kept tabs on events and topics concerning Mysore?  It is very easy to shut down a forum. But will we get another discussion forum where the main figure is willing to accept mistakes and take criticism for the mistake.  But no one can take unwarranted comments like what have happened over the last few months.  I sincerely hope you will let things stand for the time being.

As for running a discussion forum in a manner which is acceptable to all,  is anything acceptable to all?  Then it will be like running a site for the 'yes' gang.  We wouldn't want that.  A forum needs to have two sides to make a discussion in the first place.  If every topic is acceptable to all, is it a topic for discussion at all?  (I have deliberately omitted the topic of managing the site).

Waiting with a heavy heart.

I am another of the 'maligned object who watched in silence as postings after postings in this blog were crying for replies during the last fortnight! All the valiant supporters who were so vocal seemed to have melted away. No doubt there will excuses of all kinds and 'more water under bridges' until there is no more water and no more bridges! Well, blogs come and blogs go but life goes on!!

Dear Mr. GVK,

This forum has contributed a lot in terms of thoughts right from  discussion on Energy saving methods, Makkaji Chowk, MCC's apathy ,indifference etc on Devaraja Market etc. It has generated lot of  light along with some heat too, but it  helped hold a mirror to ourselves vis-a- vis how we value our environment, our city and what can be done to preserve the heritage. In that alone, it has served its purpose and I feel it can contribute a great deal in future too. There are more people who have learnt to blog, join in a discussion than a few stray ones who will always be present in any walk of city be it a cricket match or a movie theatre. The show doesn't stop because some people raise catcalls and  generally make an ass of themselves. In fact ,the strength of Mysysore should lie in disregarding the cacophony amidsy the symphony!

We can assist you in any way you want, but don't stop it. The other day some of us while talking about the problems of Mysore with Dr. Chandrashekar, Commissioner and Mr. Shrikanth, the Regional commissioner, Mysore  mentioned about Mymysore and how it takes on MCC on several issues. They welcomed the work of Mymysore, welcomed criticism and wanted to participate in the discussion.

If Mymysore can make a DIFFERENCE to the city, even on a very small scale, it is worth the effort.

Besides, some people write about the personal problem (Ah, the eye doctor!), some joke about, some write brillantly on aircrafts and write travelogue pieces ( Thank you Capt. Murthy), not to speak of Rajaji coming out of cobwebs...

It's easy to shut office. It takes more to keep it going heaven, hell or highwater.

We will push it along, Mr. GVK. Let's keep it going...

"Comments come and comments go, but we want this site to go on." to do what? Sit stationary in a geocentric orbit in space? Blogs live by oxygen of comments. Look how Thandava's comment is generating further comments/replies. You should know that by now!!!

Dear Friends,

I am very sorry to read the comments and postings lately in this blog. Perhaps I also part of this confusion, for my posting on Mysore IT Forum.

I did speak to Mr.GVK and told him on a possible meeting with him with our members. Before the meeting could take place, unfortunately his comments on German's Visit to Mysore was not taken well by our members and I was merely reflecting their sentiments. Let me tell you Mysore IT Forum and myself have no ill will on GVK or any other person or any organization in Mysore. We will certainly call them for a meeting very soon.

I too had my initial repulsion with MGP and other such organizations, that was perhaps my narrow thinking due to their perception on Cable TV industry where I am part of in Mysore. In spite of many a meetings and putting forth our point of view, the MGP never looked at our view point. Now I see a lot of value in having organizations like MGP, Mymysore blog and ACCIM ( am I right?). The more vocal they are the better it is for a growing city like our's.

It is only that, our day to day working takes a lot of time, in spite of our wish to involve more in such organizations.

Lets fight it out on ideaogical level not on personal level.

It takes a lot of effort and thinking just to keep a web site going, for a blog to be running gentlemen, people who have managed knows it better. Three cheers to GVK for having sustained all comments and brickbats and still continue to administer the site. My suggestion why don't we have a new person (who call themselves active on blogs) to take up the admin's post and moderate this site.

Any takers?..........

An encouraging post, that holds out hope for this site. My son and I would be happy to hear from any public-spirited individual or group familiar with web-hosting to discuss transfer of the site's administration. My thoughts are that it would be nice if someone from Mysore IT forum volunteered to host the site. On my part, I am always willing to be of any help the site administration may require.

Dear Sir

If you wish I would take over this website; provided I know in clear terms what is meant by this 'handling over'.

I have a little experience in site administration and I also have a little bit of social concern. And I feel I am good enough to look after this website.

The myMYSORE website is one of the few in Mysore which addresses the concern of Mysoreans and Mysore city in particular. It has kept a lively dialogue going and is felt by one and all, the site should continue its good work.Mr. GVK , singlehandedly started and nurtured the site with help from his son. It should continue in the present form with assistance and involvement from others. Since Mr. Prasad from IT forum has extended its support and . It is heartening to note C.K. Naveena is willing to render assistance. There should be a meeting by all concerned to take it to the next stage.Mr. Vijendra Rao, Mr. Gauri Satya, Mr. C.N. Ramesh and some more are keen to come to the meeting and contribute their suggestions in this regard. It is good if the meeting can take place, before Mr. GVK'S son goes back to U.S. Can I request Mr GVK  and  Mr. Prasad to organise the meeting and inform everybody  the time and venue for such a meeting, please?

I am one of those 'silent viewers' of this blog and the postings. I have visited many blogs home and abroad and know a few successful blog owners. From what they have said which I concur, comments good and bad, narrow and broad are the very drivers of blogs and any attempt to curb or muzzle them would in the end contribute to blog's decline and death. This is 21st century and one should not map the deference of 19th century . Older bloggers ( like myself) expect a degree of deference, which
at the surface sounds reasonable but acts as disincentive for younger bloggers ( in their 20s). It is the younger community of bloggers this blog needs desperately. Ignoring this could only postpone the closure.
